Cary Ann Nicholas Smith to Jane H. Nicholas Randolph

Dear Jane

I am glad to hear you have acquired the requisite of a good manager the art of scolding well. but Aunt Carr contradicts the account you give of yourself, she thinks you do not exercise yourself enough in that way. indeed from all accounts I think you are not much better than myself in the discharge of domestic concerns. I like very much having a house of my own but I detest the trouble of keeping it in order, but I believe I have and take as little trouble as most people. What can [. . .] possess you to say you will never visit me. I can tell you after mamma leaves Warren I shall expect a regular exchange. Mr Smith wished me to get the spoons to send by Aunt Carr: but Uncle Hollins says that you will sell to great disadvantage if you sell now. I have there fore thought it best to put it off until the spring, [. . .] as then you will perhaps get 120 $ whereas at present it is only worth [. . .]9— $. in the mean time you will see very little company. and at all events I will take them to you at that time. I suppose a dozen & a half of desert spoons and one dozen large. I merely write to shew my good will as I have nothing to say that Aunt Carr will not be much better able to tell you. I was sorry I could not go up to bid her good bye but I thought she would1 would have pain enough tomorrow [. . .] in parting with her [. . .] children without my adding to it I hope upon the whole she was pleased with her visit here. although I fear she will not derive much benifit from it in point of hearing. she looks extremely well and quite as fashionable as any one here. Maria is thought very pretty.

Do you know I never can be reconciled to Pap[a] being president of a bank. but that is past. I hope mamma will like her new situation. she will not be so harrassed with company as she was before. it is getting quite dark: but before I close I must tell you I am surprized to hear you have grown very grave. [. . .] what is the reason? kiss my little nieces for me and believe me

always your most affectionate Sister
