Conveyance of Pantops from John Wayles Eppes to Thomas Jefferson Randolph
This Indenture made on the first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventeen between John W Eppes of the county of Buckingham on the one part and Thomas Jefferson Randolph of the county of Albemarle on the other part witnesseth, that the said John W Eppes for and in consideration of the sum of ten thousand dollars the payment of which is secured to him by the said Jefferson Randolph & Wilson Cary Nicholas both of the county of albemarle, and also on the further consideration of five shillings lawful money of Virginia to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, He the said John W Eppes hath bargained sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents doth bargain sell alien & confirm unto Thomas Jefferson Randolph a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the county of albemarle adjoining the Lands of Thomas Jefferson and formerly a parcel thereof, known by the name of Pantops containing eight hundred acres be the same more or less, To have and to hold the above mentioned tract of land together with its appurtenances unto the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph his heirs & assigns in fee simple for ever—And the said John W Eppes for himself and his heirs doth hereby relinquish and convey unto the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph and his heirs, all estate right tittle or interest in and to the above mentioned Tract of land. and the same to the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph & his heirs forever1 will warrant and defend against any claim on the part of himself or of his son Francis Eppes. In testimony whereof the said John W Eppes hath hereunto affixed his hand and seal the day & year above written.
Cumberland County, to wit
We Jerman Baker & Samuel Hobson Magistrates of the said County, do hereby certify that John W Eppes party to the within conveyance, hath duly acknowledged the same before us, on the Eleventh day of May in the year, eighteen hundred & seventeen, & desired us to certify the said acknowledgement to the Clerk of the County Court of Albemarle, in order that the said conveyance may be recorded. This Indenture was produced to me in the said Office and duly certified by two Justices of the peace for the County of Cumberland to have been Acknowledged before them by John W Eppes party thereto thereupon the same was admitted to record
