Edmund Randolph Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia To all To whom these presents shall come Greeting Know ye that in Consideration of the Ancient Composition of one pound Sterling paid by Thomas Jefferson Esquire into the Treasury of this Commonwealth, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said Thomas Jefferson Esquire a Certain Tract or Parcel of land Containing one hundred and ninety six Acres by Survey bearing Date the thirtieth day of January one thousand seven hundred and Eighty Seven, lying & being in the County of Albemarle [. . .] Some of the branches of Buck Island Creek and bounded as followeth To wit Beginning at a white oak in Edmund Carters line on a branch thence a new line South sixty one Degrees East two hundred and sixty one Poles to Pointers in William Reynolds line thence on his lines South fifty Degrees West twenty two poles crossing Locust branch to a pine South sixty four Degrees West seventy four poles crossing a branch to a pine said Reynolds corner thence a new line same Course continued [. . .] forty nine poles in all one hundred and twenty three poles to Pointers thence a new line North sixty one Degrees West one hundred and twenty two Poles crossing a Branch to Pointers on Edmund Carters line thence his line North fifteen Degrees East one hundred and Seventy two Poles to the beginning with its appurtenances To have and to hold the said Tract or parcel of land, With its appurtenances to the said Thomas Jefferson Esqr & his heirs forever In witness whereof the said Edmund Randolph Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia hath hereunto set his hand & Caused the lesser Seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond on the Twelfth Day of April one Thousand Seven Hundred & Eighty Eight and of the Commonwealth the Twelfth—
