From Alexander Garrett to [John H. Cocke]
Dear Sir | Charlottesville 8th February 1819 |
I recieved by Mr. Neilson the kale seed sent Mr. Minor & myself for which please accept my thanks. The occurance which took place at our last court between Mr. Bankhead and Mr. J. Randolph, prevented me from comeing down on wednessday last as I intended, the pa and will continue to prevent my comeing for 10 or 12 daysto come. the particulars of this unfortunate occurance Mr. Neilson will be better able to detail to you than I am by writeing, Mr. R. immediately after the occurance, was taken into Mr. Leitch’s counting room, where his wounds were dressed. there he lay untill wednessday about 12 oclock, when he was removed to my house upon a litter, where he now is, his wounds have never been painfull, and are now healing very rapidly, so that his Doctors now think that in 8 or 10 days he will be able to walk about; he was very ill on wednessday night with a severe cholic occasioned by his drinking a quantity of Apple water, this weakened him exceedingly from which he has not yet entirely recovered, yet doing well as his P. say.
The day after you left this, I proceeded to assertain, whether Mr: Lewis would sell the lot of Land of which we were speaking when you were here or not and without intimateing any wish to purchase, I assertained that an effort had been made by the Legatees among themselves to exchange one with another so as to accomodate each and that this was still pending and likely to take place. under these circumstancies I thought it not proper to disturb their arrangements by any offer of mine to purchase, I am still waiting on the event of their negociations, and should an exchange not take place, I shall then endeavour to effect a purchase
