Indenture between Thomas Jefferson Randolph, Jane H. Nicholas Randolph, and the Literary Fund for Shadwell and Pantops Lands

This indenture made on this twenty second day of April in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two: between Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Jane his wife of the county of Albemarle on the one part and the President and directors of the Literary fund of the other part Witnesseth; That the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Jane his wife for and in consideration of the sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars, good & lawfull money to them in hand paid by the said President & Directors of the Literary Fund, at & before the ensealing & delivery of these presents, the reciept whereof is hereby acknowledged and for which the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph hath executed to them his bond payable with interest as in said bond expressed and which bond bears even date with these presents hath bargained and sold and by these presents doth bargain & sell unto the said President & directors of the Literary Fund their successors & assigns certain tracts & P parcels of land situate in said county of Albemarle. to wit one called & known by the name of Shadwell, containing by survey seven hundred and seventy five acres, bounded by the Rivanna River, the lands of Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Mann Randolph senior and being the tract given by the said Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Mann Randolph senior to the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph. one other tract of land called and known by the name of Pant-Ops containing by survey eight hundred and nineteen and a quarter acres, purchased by said Thomas Jefferson Randolph from John Wayles Eppes Esqr of Buckingham and bounded by the Rivanna river The lands of Thomas Jefferson Walter Key, John H Craven and Nicholas Lewis: together with all and singular, the appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appurtaining unto the said President & Directors of the Literary Fundand their successorsand assigns fore ever; To have and to hold the said lands and premises & all the appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appurtaining unto the said President & Directors of the Literary Fund & their successors & assigns as aforesaid.—Provided allways and upon this condition that if the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph his heirs executors or administrators shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said President and directors of the Literary Fund their successors & assigns the said sum of seven thousand five hundred dollars when the same shall become payable with interest after the rate of six per cent per annum according to the condition of his bond aforesaid; then and in that case the estate hereby conveyed is to cease and to revert to the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph his heirs and assigns and this indenture is from thenceforth to be void and no effect. In Witness whereof the said Thomas Jefferson Randolph and Jane his wife have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals on the day & year first above written
