Thomas Jefferson Randolph to Jane H. Nicholas Randolph

My dearest Jane

After passing a very good night; [. . .] this morning my dear grandfather began to give unequivocal indication of approaching dissolution. he sank rapidly for some time and is has since remaining remained stationary bearly sensible, occasionally, we look from hour to hour to a close to the scene. My mother perfectly conscious of his situation I hope will bear it. I wish you could come up, with none but Virginia & Mary with her I think your presence might be serviceable. the Dr says it is of no importance seeing Mary. to day or even to morrow. if her room1 is kept in the same possition as yesterday I will hang out a white towel or sheet upon the thorn bush, on the brow above Priscilla house to let you know when all is over

affectionately
Th. J. Randolph
