John Gray’s Statement about Student Gambling with Hotel Keepers
[ca. Dec. 1825] |
John Gray—Has been told that there were three of the Hotel Keepers who played with the students for money—Never played himself and never was where hotel keepers were playing with students—Mr Arthur smith told him that Spotswood & Conway had played with students for money—Has frequently in course of this & last year heard of Students playing—He & wife have sent for the Students some times & admonished them not to play—Knows nothing of his own knowledge of Students playing—Has1 frequently heard reports among the Students of their playing with Richardson Spotswood & Conway—Can’t mention any particular student at particular time—except when Arthur smith accidentally mentioned the other morning what is alluded to above—Has also heard students talking of the same three hotel keepers drinking with the Students within the University—The playing of Cards above referred to was carried on in a dormitory & inferred the play was for money—Perhaps Mr Chs Taylor the student Can give some information—
