Alexander Garrett to John H. Cocke

My Dear Sir,

Charles with his charge of boys arrived yesterday evening a little before sun set. I sent them on to Mr Brockenbrough, and would have gone up myself but was detained by company, I go up this morning with Nelson, should Doctor Dunglison decline taking charles Nelson, I will endeavour to get him with some other, I fear his hire may be thought rather above the usual price if so I shall take the liberty of reducing it feeling assured that you would be satisfied at my doing so.—since writing you last I am satisfied that Mr Beale does not contemplate a sale of his lands here as yet. indeed I believe that they are intended for the benefit of his neice exclusively, and therefore will not be sold untill she arrives of age.The University is succeeding in number of students beyonnd our expectation. I learn that nearly 80. have entered the institution, the Professors are still popular Mr Emmet has arrived, Mr Tucker is expected every hour, all we now lack is the Law professor, the conduct of the Students thus far, is unexceptionable (save in one or two instances)

Mrs Garrett recieved the Lemon Mrs Cocke was so good as to send her, and now offers her sincere thanks in return, being all she has to offer worthy Mrs Cocke’s acceptance, It would give us real pleasure to visit you on our way to Richmond the next month, at present however, we cannot certainly say it will be in our power to afford ourselves that pleasure. We shall see you here before we set out on our contemplated trip. in the mean time Mrs G. joins me in tendering to Mrs Cocke yourself & household our affectionate regards.

Yours truly
