Edmund Bacon to Arthur S. Brockenbrough
Sir | Monticello December 27th 1821 |
In answer to yours of a few days date ago on the subjec of hireing slavs. I concluded when I offerd to take seventy dollars round for my [four men] that it was to put an end to the business and sent to You Mr Maupins note to me to let you see his offer—it is true he priced Wilson 10$ lower than the rest. he priced the others at $80 so that you will find the price of $70 each is much less than to rate 3 at 80$ & one at 70. however we have had enough to say on the subjec and [. . .] now inclined to put an end to it. the bearer of this is John whom you did not see with the others I should have answerd [. . .] yours sooner had it been in my power to have sent John but now you have seen all four. and if you chuse to take them at $70 dollars round you can do so. Otherwise the subjec is with me at an end
Lewis John & Wilson will be subjec to be given up at the fall if I required them but Isham you can certainly Keep till christmas
