Arthur S. Brockenbrough to John H. Cocke

Dear sir,

Mr Chapman informs he intends over to1 see you today, believing some unfavorable impression had been made on you relative to his conduct here as one of the keepers of the Hotells—As to myself I can say nothing to his prejudice—as a keeper of an Hotel he is very hospitably disposed and in some cases in the commencement of the business might have extended his kindness too far to the Students—At a late party at his house where I was invigh invited with a large company—Mr Chapman did introduce Wine & Brandy, tho’ not untill some of the company had asked for it, and finding after a short time that the Students made too free with it, he very prudently put it up and did not while I was present introduce it for the company generally again I look upon him as a very correct moral man and well calculated to keep one of the boarding houses he is kind and attentive to his boarders as far as I have been able to judge—

When shall we have the pleasure of seeing you up hear—when you come again I hope you will not be so busy as to prevent your spending a day with me—As one of the executive Committee I hope you will be here to direct the laying of lots for the professors Hotel keepers &c I am Dr Sir

yours in haste
